There’s a dangerous trend gripping social media: the rise of the so-called professional bystander. Armed with a smartphone and an unchecked sense of certainty, these individuals capture short, contextless clips of emergency services in action and narrate over them like experts. But they’ve never served. They’ve never run toward danger. And they almost never wait to see the full picture.

The latest viral video started off like so many others. A group of armed police officers from an ARV unit pursue a suspect through a street. Shouts fill the air, weapons are drawn, and one officer uses a distraction technique—a controlled kick to the suspect’s shoulder as he lies on the ground. Cue the running commentary: "What are they kicking him for?" "That’s mad!" "All that for a phone and cigarettes?"

Except it wasn’t. What the professional bystanders missed—or ignored—was the forest for the trees. Anyone with even a sliver of operational experience, or frankly, a dose of common sense, would clock the seriousness of the scene. You don’t get multiple ARV officers deploying with MP5s over a shoplifter or a hurty-words call. This is clearly a firearms deployment, triggered by credible intelligence. And yet, commentary continues to swirl before the facts even land.

The video, as it turns out, had a twist. After several minutes of condemnation, someone finally notices what trained eyes would have seen from the start: a firearm, visible on the ground near the suspect. A real gun. Not a phone. Not a vape. A deadly weapon, lying inches from the man being detained.

Had the video ended just seconds earlier, that moment of truth would have vanished. The viral narrative would’ve told a very different story—one of so-called excessive force, police brutality, and injustice. Instead, we were lucky. Luckily, the footage ran long enough to reveal the truth this time. Because, more often than not, it doesn’t. And in those silences, reputations burn, trust erodes, and operational safety suffers.

A still from the widely shared video shows armed officers detaining a suspect—commentary over the footage questioned their actions, unaware a firearm would later be discovered.
