A man has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm after three police officers were seriously assaulted during an incident on Gossops Drive in Crawley this afternoon.
Officers from Sussex Police were called to the scene around 2.30 pm today (May 31) to carry out an arrest linked to an ongoing investigation. According to a police spokesperson, the suspect violently resisted, seriously injuring three officers before fleeing into a nearby property.
All three officers sustained significant injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment. Their current conditions have not been disclosed, but Sussex Police have confirmed the officers will be fully supported as they recover.
A 43-year-old man from Crawley was later arrested and remains in custody.
Detective Superintendent Karrie Bohanna condemned the violence, saying:
“Violence towards emergency workers is absolutely unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
Police officers put themselves at risk to protect the public, but they should not expect to be assaulted in the course of their duties.
I would like to commend these three officers for their bravery, and they will receive the full support of our police service while they recover.
Enquiries are ongoing to understand exactly what has happened in this incident. If you have any information or relevant video footage – such as from a doorbell or mobile phone – please report it to us online or via 101, quoting Operation Whitby.”
A heavy police presence was seen throughout the afternoon, and the road was believed to be temporarily closed while officers responded. The incident is now concluded, according to local sources.
