WATCH | Driver Caught Using Bungee Cords to Keep Car Door Shut in Fenton
Stunned police discover dangerously unroadworthy vehicle with ‘basketball hoop’ door and three defective tyres
Staffordshire Roads Policing officers were left stunned after pulling over a car in which the driver’s door was being held shut using bungee cords (scroll down for the video).
The astonishing discovery was made on Victoria Road in Fenton, where officers from the Staffordshire Police Road Crime Team pulled over the blue Nissan Micra. The car was found to have three defective tyres, but what shocked officers the most was the dangerous makeshift attempt to keep the driver’s door closed using nothing more than a few elastic cords.
In a post on X, the force revealed the door was in such a state that it could “double up as a basketball hoop”, adding to the disbelief around the condition of the car. The vehicle was immediately prohibited from driving, and the driver has been reported for using a vehicle in a dangerous condition.
A video shared by officers shows a police officer opening the door with ease, revealing the bungee cords wrapped inside and out in a desperate attempt to keep it shut while on the move.
This incident falls under Operation Lightning, a campaign aimed at keeping Staffordshire’s roads safe by targeting unroadworthy vehicles and dangerous driving.
Staffordshire Police said the situation could have led to serious consequences, especially if the cords had failed while the vehicle was in motion.
